The Lifter
“He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.” Psalm 40:2
As I was bathing my son and preparing to lift him out of the water, I asked my dad if he could please spot me. Lifting Siggy out of the bath always makes me a little nervous, I sometimes feel dizzy after leaning over to wash him, and I like to know there’s a second set of hands to help at that moment. My dad is a strong guy, but as we’ve both gotten older and I’m a full-grown woman now, rather than his little girl, I wasn’t sure how easily he could lift me anymore. I simply wanted him there to help in case I slipped. Instead, as I rose from my awkward, numb-legged baby bath position my dad simply gripped my arms and lifted me to my feet. Easy. I was surprised to see how much strength he still has, and that I’m evidently not as heavy to him as I sometimes feel.
This moment, with the hum of Christmas being ever-present, made me think of our Heavenly father.
You might feel that as you’ve gone through this life you’ve become too heavy — that your mistakes, your hurt, your issues — they’re all a little too much, that they can’t be lifted. I’m here to remind you that we have a Father, a King, who is strong enough for any weight you might bear. To Him, our “stuff” is light, and He’s more than willing to come down to where we are, as He did on the first Christmas, and lift us from our heavy place. You’re not too much for Him, you’re everything He wants — worth the utmost sacrifice. Let His strength lift you. Christ is coming.
